8-hour XC Event
In conjunction with the 2008 Suncorp North Queensland Games
Now being held on Sunday 25th May 2008 – LAKE ROSS (Ross Dam), Kelso, Townsville
The Subway HOTRock8 is an off-road endurance mountain bike race for solo entrants or relay teams of 2, 3 or 4 people of any level of ability. During the event you aim to complete as many laps of the

You can have fun by challenging yourself or your team to do as many laps as you can, have a bit of a break, a bite to eat, and even have a nap! This is a chance to get out there as hard and fast as you want or to be part of a team for a bit of in-house rivalry or just a have great day riding and socialising. So go and dust off the old treadlie now!

When you register online you will be asked to read and accept the Terms and Conditions of Entry which include an “Assumption of Risk and Liability Waiver”. You will need to bring a copy of your registration receipt when you collect your rider pack and number, along with your MTBA licence if you are a Senior or Junior member. An MTBA Day Rider Licence does not provide the same level of insurance cover as an Annual Licence – see www.mtba.asn.au for more information.
The Day Rider Licence will cover the pre-ride on the 24/5/08 and the event on the 25/5/08
If you are under 18 Yrs
All competitors under the age of 18 on 24/5/08 must be signed in by a parent or guardian. This can be done when you pick up your rider number and pack.
Pre-ride of the course
You can pre-ride the course on Saturday 24/5/08 from 2.00 – 4.00pm but you must already be registered and have your rider number on your bike before undertaking the ride. No rider number means NO ride. There will be no checkpoint assistance or first aid on site – you pre-ride the course at your own risk.
We will be riding on private property (NQ Water land). DO NOT RIDE THE COURSE UNTIL THE PRE-RIDE ON 24/5/08 . Our access permit to this land is restricted to Rockwheelers members and Rockwheelers sanctioned events only.
How to get to Lake Ross
At the Willows Shopping Centre, Thuringowa, turn into Riverway Drive (a.k.a. Upper Ross River Rd ) and follow the road all the way to Kelso. Keep going and you'll get to Ross Dam Park on your left – it is just beside the Ross Dam. There will be designated parking areas in the vicinity of the Park. MAP
Camping on site will not be available
Unfortunately we can no longer provide camping on site at Ross Dam Park the evening before the event due to public liability insurance difficulties. If you are coming from out of town please start making your accommodation arrangements now as places are filling fast.
Riders need to bring
Other bits and pieces
What to expect
Just because it is 8 hours long doesn't mean that everyone has to ride for the full 8 hours!!!
For the majority of the participants their team rides as a relay team, with one “active” rider at a time on the track. The rest of the time the team sits back in the shade comparing notes on the track and their laps, have something to eat and drink then goes for it again when the “active” rider hits the transition area to take a break. Solo riders can do the same – this is your own challenge – attack it as you will!
The course has been designed to suit all levels of ability from strong solo riders to recreational “weekend warriors”. Each team member is only required to complete at least one lap with the aim being for the team to complete as many laps as they can in the 8 hours. A lap may take anywhere from less than 30 minutes or up to 1 hour depending on your ability. It will still be hot out there in April so bring plenty of water and something to sit under!
Volunteers
These events could not survive nor even exist without the help and support of our teams of volunteers.
If you would be keen to be a volunteer before, during or after the event (or know someone else who would) please contact Rockwheelers on doreensmailbox@yahoo.com . Volunteers are highly valued members of the event organisation.
